American Samoa's Governor says growth in the economy resulted in an overall job increase in 2005.

But Togiola Tulafono said that the canneries and private sector employment went down, due to the rise in fuel prices and uncertainty over tax laws.

However the governor says there is excellent potential for the local fishing industry.

Togiola also says there were more than 3-thousand business applications processed in 2005, an increase of 4.5 per cent over total applications in 2004.

Togiola says over the past decade, there was a 50-per cent increase in business applications, which signals that private enterprises, apart from government and the canneries, are continuing to experience growth.
