Guam fears rise in ice cases

At least seven methamphetamine drug cases are scheduled to be heard in the District Court of Guam next month, starting off a year that the US Attorney believes will see the number of similar cases grow significantly.

The Pacific Daily News reports that since November, more than 2 million US dollars of the drug, commonly known as ice, has been seized at the island's various ports of entry.

The Guam Customs Department says while there have been higher dollar amounts seized in the past, the seizures customs are pulling now are significant as the street value of the drug on Guam has more than halved.

Customs Director Ricardo Blas says although more than 5 million dollars worth of the drug was seized in 2005, it hasn't addressed the local manufacturing of the drug.

US Attorney Leonardo Rapadas says he believes the island will begin to see an increase in cases tried in the federal court as more people are producing the drug on island.
