PNG government seeks more land for evacuated Manam Islanders

Additional land is being sought for Manam Islanders in Papua New Guinea to grow food crops on.

Manam Islanders had to be evacuated 14 months ago to several care centres in Madang, after the island's volcano erupted.

The Chair of Manam Humanitarian Committee Sir Arnold Amet says the government still hasn't declared Manam Island safe.

He says the government is hoping to secure enough land by the middle of the year for the islanders to grow food gardens on the mainland and become self supporting.

"The plantation land is not totally satisfactory, it is not fertile or suffient in acerage to garden sufficiently. So additional land is available and we are just in the process of demarcating that land."

Sir Arnold says in the meantime the government and aid agencies are providing enough food for the islanders.
