Micronesia becomes international postage destination for US mail

11:53 am on 20 January 2006

From this month onwards, anyone sending post from the United States to the Federated States of Micronesia will have to use international rate stamps.

The FSM Postal Service says the rate change affects the nation's incoming mail from all US points, but the US domestic rate will remain applicable for FSM's outgoing mail within the four states and to all US points.

These postal service changes were expected since the 2003 signing of the amended Compact of Free Association with the US.

Micronesia now no longer has access to United States Postal Service press mail without guarantee, registered mail, insured parcel service, recorded delivery and money orders.
