Samoa opposition blames high cost of living on government

1:29 pm on 24 January 2006

The Samoan opposition leader, Le Mamea Ropati, has blamed the ruling Human Rights Protection Party for the high cost of living in Samoa.

Speaking in parliament, Le Mamea claimed the HRPP had done nothing in the past five years to cushion the effects of the rising cost of living on ordinary people.

Le Mamea says the cost of living has never been as high as it is now.

Le Mamea pointed to the cost of tinned fish after a government ban on the sale of whole cases, with single cans now being more expensive.

The opposition leader has also questioned the accuracy of Central Bank of Samoa reports suggesting that the cost of living is dropping.
