A former beauty queen in French Polynesia has laid assault charges against the visiting former Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona.

The news agency AFP reports Mr Maradona threw a glass at the woman's head during an altercation in a nightclub in Bora Bora at the weekend.

The former Miss Bora Bora, Tumata Vaimarae, had to have eight stitches and take 10 days off work.

If Maradona is convicted, he faces a maximum of three years in jail.

For the last fortnight Mr Maradona, his daughter, his niece and her friend have been staying in Bora Bora.

According to the local prosecutor Jean Bianconi, there were two fights during the evening, one involving Mr Maradona's daughter and another involving the glass throwing incident.

According to witnesses close to the nightclub management, the former footballer was a model client, warm, calm and not demanding.
