Senators in American Samoa are questioning why an advisor , George Wray, was paid more than $50,000 US dollars for helping the government purchase an airplane.

The senators have questioned Wray's role after a government financial report revealed the payment.

Wray said in a telephone interview from his Florida home that he managed the project for the governor for about a year.

He said he charged no fees and received no fees or commission for his service, although the Governor had insisted on it, but he had refused.

Wray said the payment he received from government was simply reimbursement for personal money spent on the project - including travel and accomodation.
