Samoa electoral commission clarifies voting terms

Samoa's electoral commissioner says it is not a legal requirement that voters must have lived there for at least three years in order to vote.

His comment follows conflicting reports as to the eligibility of Samoan voters overseas to register.

The Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele had been reported saying voters must satisfy the three year requirement, prompting Opposition leader, Le Mamea Ropati, to say he doesn't understand the electoral laws.

The commissioner, Tanuvasa Isitolo Lemisio, says any Samoan citizen can register to vote as long as they travel to Samoa to do so by February the 14th.

He says there is a law however, that any candidate planning to stand in the election must have resided in Samoa for at least three years.
