Rescue bid for Marshall Islands-registered tanker in English Channel

5:09 pm on 1 February 2006

A chemical tanker flying the Marshall Islands flag is being towed towards northern France after the ship collided with another vessel in the English Channel.

The Ece was the only ship to suffer major damage when it crashed into a Polish cargo vessel and all 22 crew members of both ships were airlifted to safety.

The Ece is listing with a cargo of 10-thousand tonnes of phosphoric acid which is not thought to be leaking.

French rescue teams are using tugs to bring the tanker to the port of Le Havre in northern France before it sinks.

Our correspondent in the Marshall Islands, Giff Johnson, explains many ships around the world fly the Marshall Islands flag.

"The Marshall Islands registry is said to be ranked number five in the world in terms of gross tonnage, but I think obviously the ship owners see it for a variety of reasons, whether it's crew requirement, taxes and fees are heavier and they can do it in various offshore registries around the world."
