Palau contributes police to RAMSI in the name of regionalism

Palau's Director of Police says they are contributing two police officers to the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands in the spirit of regional co-operation.

Hacime Teli says preparation has already begun for the deployment in March of two Palauan police officers to the Australia-led intervention force.

The officers will join a handful of officers from the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia in RAMSI, marking the first contribution to the regional police force.

Director Teli says that Palau's President decided late last year, following the last Pacific Island Forum meeting, to assist RAMSI.

"We're part of the region and we have to help our own people, our neighbours. And I think the Forum Island nations agreed to help in that effort, and Palau is part of that."

Hacime Teli says his officers have a lot to gain from the experience that working in RAMSI will provide.
