New Zealand Tokelauans rue lost chance to vote on their country's future

A Wellington Tokelauan community leader, Mika Perez, says there's still huge disappointment among the people living in New Zealand that they're not able to vote on next week's referendum in Tokelau.

More than seven thousand Tokelauans live in New Zealand, but only six hundred living on the three atolls will vote on a referendum on whether they remain a colony or choose self determination.

Mr Perez understands, however there is still huge support in Tokelau for those living in New Zealand to be part of this historical process.

"There is also a current discussion in Tokelau now why the Tokelau New Zealand did not cannot take part in a referendum. Well I think it's a bit late but I hope in the future Tokelauans in New Zealand will take part in such a very very historical because the first time ever Tokelau doing such a referendum for the development of Tokelauan future politically."
