Samoa government accused of wasting millions of dollars on closed airport

A Samoan MP has criticized the government for pouring millions into renovating the Fagalii International Airport despite knowing it would close down.

The airport closed more than a year ago.

Fa'asaleleaga MP Leanapapa Laki said in Parliament that this was a sign of a government that lacks vision and is shortsighted, and money had been wasted.

But the Samoa Observer quotes Minister of Works Faumuina Liuga as saying that the safety of people using the airport and nearby residents was the main reason why the airport closed.

He said electrical cables buried underground were unsafe and houses situated near the runway were located close to a nearby petrol station.
