The New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters has today launched the Fiji Civics Education initiative in conjunction with the United Nations Development Programme.

New Zealand is providing nearly one and a half million US dollars for the initiative which is part of the UNDP's Good Governance Programme.

The programme aims to make the key institutions of governance more relevant and accessible to the people of Fiji.

Mr Peters says it is a unique opportunity to assist with developing a fair and robust environment for Fiji's future development.

Mr Peter's three day visit includes meetings with the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, the military commander Frank Bainimaram and the foreign minister Kaliopate Tavola.
