Fij Muslim leader says violence not part of Islam

4:10 pm on 8 February 2006

The Fiji Muslim League says acts of violence perpetrated by Muslims in Europe and other countries are not part of Islam.

Radio Fiji quotes the League president, Hafiz Khan, as saying while some people have demonstrated their anger by resorting to violence, Muslims will not resort to such actions.

Mr Khan says while they are firm in their opposition to cartoons degrading the Prophet Mohammed, they will not choose violence in any form to stress their opposition.

He says Pacific Muslims should not engage in any acts of violence because their religion stands for tolerance, humanity, love and affection.

Mr Khan says they do not share the view of barbed violence in any shape or form and do not believe that extremism is a way to express themselves.
