Concerns in American Samoa at apparent lack of security of internet

8:35 pm on 14 February 2006

The Acting CEO of the American Samoa Power Authority and director of the E-Commerce Development Corporation are about to appear before a Senate hearing looking at the security of email and internet communication.

Senator Alo Dr. Paul Stevenson says there's evidence that some agencies who use the network do not have secure internet systems.

He says the recent problems at ASPA whereby employees have been accused of receiving emails that were not intended for them, suggests that all communication is being monitored.

Alo said he is very interested to know how the ASPA management knew that the employees had received or sent out the unauthorized emails, unless there was a monitoring system that tracks email communication.

He believes this might amount to an invasion of privacy.
