Fiji will make no changes to electoral laws before election

Fiji cabinet has decided that there will be no changes to electoral laws and regulations before this year's general election.

A statement from the Prime Minister's Offce says it is now too late to make changes to the Electoral Act as it would create more confusion among voters.

Fiji's chairman of the Electoral Commission, Graham Leung, had asked the government to consider making several changes to the Act, one of which was for a more simplified ballot paper.

Fiji's prime minister has told Mr Leung that at this late stage in the lead up to this year's elections, and with preparations already done including voter education on the current voting system, it would be best not to proceed with any changes.

But Laisenia Qarase has stressed that following the general elections, there will be a comprehensive review of the Electoral Act in conjunction with a substantive review of Fiji's Constitution.

Mr Qarase says the review will include current voting provisions and arrangements and will take into account concerns highlighted by the Electoral Commission.

The Fiji Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, has attacked the decision not to make changes ahead of the elections but the National Federation Party says it supports the cabinet decision because it is too late to make changes for this election.
