US dolphin liberation activists have called on the Solomon Islands government to take over a controversial marine park where they say 20 dolphins are starving and dehydrated.

The Gavetu park is operated by the Solomon Islands Marine Mammal Education Centre run by Canadian Chris Porter.

Four dolphins have reportedly died in recent weeks leaving only 20 out of more than 100 originally captured for the park.

The government says it has no plans to take over the dolphin park.
