Scientists from the United States and Kiribati will soon be working together to better understand, detect and mitigate the effects of earthquakes and resulting tsunamis in the central Pacific Ocean.
Under a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding signed in Suva today, Kiribati has agreed to host the installation of three new seismic detection stations, which will be linked to the Global Seismograph Network or GSN.
Once installed, data from the stations will be shared with scientists across the globe, including with those at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii, which provides tsunami warnings to nations throughout the Pacific.
