A proposed bill to amend the current school truancy and non-attendance law could see both truants and parents in American Samoa paying heavy fines and serving community service.
The bill's sponsor, Olo Ropati Tagovailoa Atimalala is quoted in the Samoa News as saying that the bill seeks to deter the increasing number of truants and neglectful parents who do not realize the consequences of their actions.
If the legislation is passed, truancy fines will go up from 15 US dollars to a maximum of three hundred or a month in prison.
