NZ Foreign Minister on tour of Tonga, Samoa and Niue

7:47 am on 13 March 2006

New Zealand's Foreign Minister has arrived in Tonga for a two day visit to find out more about the kingdom's political and social development.

Winston Peters will also visit Samoa and Niue over the next week.

Koro Vakauta is travelling with the Minister:

"Mr Peters has stressed in recent times the importance of the Pacific region to New Zealand and he says this trip will enable him to keep informed about the situation in three very different countries. Today, he will meet three cabinet ministers, including his Tongan counterpart, Tu'a Taumoepeau Tupou and the ministers responsible for Justice and Finance. Mr Peters is also due to inspect an NZ Aid-funded water supply project in the villages of Lapaha and Tatakamotonga. Mr Peters leaves Tonga tomorrow night after meeting democracy advocate and MP, Prince Tu'ipelehake, and the acting Prime Minister, Dr Feleti Sevele."
