American Samoa's Senate President Lolo Letalu Moliga has asked his staff to look into the issue of returning communal lands to the original family owners.
There have been calls for the government to give back land that was condemned or leased to it many years ago.
But Lolo has told the senators that it is not an easy issue as many family lands, especially in the Tualauta district are now in the hands of the government.
But, he says there should be an opinion on how the families can get their land back.
The Attorney General says if the land was condemned, the land is still government property, even if it is not used.
He says the law remains unchanged unless the Fono passes a measure to return unused government land to their original owners.
