American Samoa cannery boss welcomes new rules for foreign workers

A cannery company in American Samoa has welcomed a decision by the attorney general on foreign workers.

Samoa Packing is one of two canneries which have been struggling to hire workers due to strict immigration requirements.

The two canneries have now been granted special provisions by the Attorney General to fast track immigration clearances for foreign nationals intending to work for the canneries.

Demand from the US mainland for canned tuna has led to a major recruit drive for new workers.

Herman Gerbauer, Samoa Packing's general manager, says the Attorney general's move is a great relief.

"We appreciate him giving priority to our needs because it helps the needs of the whole economy."
