Some Kanak unionists continue strike at New Caledonian radio station

9:51 am on 27 March 2006

Striking employees at New Caledonia's public broadcaster, RFO, have lifted the blockade of its premises in Noumea but they vow to continue their strike.

The action by the mainly Kanak USTKE union is in support of a technician who was sacked this month after a court gave him a suspended three-month jail sentence for assaulting a non-striking worker during a strike at RFO in 2004.

The 2004 strike was called over a contract dispute involving the same technician and lasted more than three months.

Normal broadcasting resumed on Saturday but the USTKE union members are still on strike.

The strike is being observed by about a dozen of RFO New Caledonia's 150 staff.
