Fiji army call-up coincides with May election

Fiji's military has called up more than 500 territorial force soldiers into camp for training during the week when general elections will be held in May.

But the military spokesman, Lt Col Orisi Rabukawaqa, has told Radio Legend that it is just a coincidence that the camp will be held at the same time as the elections.

He says there is no sinister motive as the camp was planned well in advance and the dates set before the general elections were announced.

Lt Col Rabukawaqa says territorial camps are an ongoing exercise with the most recent one involving the Suva-based 5th Battalion being held only last weekend.

He says the 6th and 8th Battalions will be next followed by the two battalions from the west and then the one from Labasa in the north.

Meanwhile, he has also confirmed that the military is now going back to the provinces which had earlier refused to allow the army to carry out its truth and justice campaign.
