Pacific Ministers agree to wind back state telecoms monopolies

Pacific Communications ministers have reached an agreement to wind back state telecoms monopolies as one of the first stages in implementing a regional digital strategy.

The ministers put out the Wellington Declaration after yesterday's meeting in the New Zealand capital.

It focuses on the establishment of a Task Force to immediately begin work on widening the availability of ICTs or Information and Communications Technology.

A key part is the removal of monopolies to encourage competition.

However, Nauru's Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Baron Waqa says, in countries such as his, this is not yet feasible.

"But in Nauru you must understand that we have a very small country and we don't have much room for competition really and while we are picking up economically we want to maintain certain services until we are in a better position and then we will start opening it up."
