Communications Ministers agree to accelerate IT in the region

Pacific Communications Ministers have agreed to accelerate the development of information and communication technology in the region.

The Ministers met yesterday in the New Zealand capital where they agreed on a draft digital strategy, dubbed the Wellington Declaration.

It includes a road map with a Task Force which will focus on seven aims over the next year.

There have been discussions on digitial strategies for the Pacific going back seven years, but New Zealand's Communications Minister David Cunliffe, who chaired the meeting, says this latest agreement is different.

"What we have got here is now a political level endorsement of a draft strategy, which was only ever kicked around in draft before, and we have picked out of what was quite a long series of documents around half a dozen practical initiatives that we can take as first steps to get the acceleration path going."
