Papua New Guinea's largest hospital will be asked to dig up the medical waste it buried on traditional land in Port Moresby.
Two weeks ago, the Port Moresby General Hospital was reported to have dumped its medical waste near Kou Kou village on Abahua customary land.
The Post Courier newspaper reports that following complaints from villagers, the Department of Environment and Conservation inspected the site.
The Department says medical waste comes under the hazardous waste category.
It says its taking the matter very seriously.
It says the Health Department will also be asked to clean up or rehabilitate the land which has been contaminated by the waste.
In response to landowners' threat to take the matter to court, the officers say the villagers had a strong case to argue.
