Fiji election candidate promises to free coup front man George Speight

A Fiji general election candidate is promising to do everything he can to have the coup front man, George Speight, released from prison and pardoned.

Speight is currently serving a life term for treason on Nukulau Island, just offshore from Suva.

Fiji TV reports that the promise to have him freed is coming from Lasarusa Sovea, a disgruntled member of the pro-coup Conservative Alliance Matanitu Vanua party which dissolved and merged with the ruling SDL party in February.

Mr Sovea is among 35 members of the former Conservative Alliance who will be contesting the election as the Coalition of Independent Conservatives.

Mr Sovea says he is a close personal friend of Speight and has promised to exhaust every legal means to have him freed.

He says he has been elected by the Coalition of Independent Conservatives to have not only Speight but all prisoners in jail for coup related offences released and pardoned.
