PNG opposition says government re-shuffle has no purpose

Papua New Guinea's opposition has criticised this week cabinet reshuffle, saying it serves no purpose.

The opposition leader, Peter O'Neill, says the move by the prime minister, Sir Michael Somare, has failed to address the problem of the non-performance of cabinet ministers.

He cited the former Health Minister, Melchior Pep as an example and criticised his move to an equally important portfolio such as Inter-Government Relations.

Mr O'Neill also questioned the decision to strip finance portfolio from the Treasurer Bart Philemon.

He says that was more an issue of the National Alliance Party than about the non-performance by Mr Philemon as a minister.
