The French High Commission has called a meeting today to find a solution to a crisis that has shutdown the giant Goro nickel project.

The destruction of millions of dollars of equipment at the weekend followed clashes between the Kanak group Rheebu Nuu has forced the company to lay off around 1,300 people.

The general manager of Goro Nickel, Ron Renton, says they couldn't guarantee the safety of staff at the several work sites.

He says the France has to act to ensure the development goes ahead

"Until there is rule of law in this country we believe we will not have confidence that our work site is secure. What they means is people cannot flagrantly break the law and there not be sanctions."
