New Caledonia's Goro talks despite fresh attack

12:48 pm on 7 April 2006

The Goro Nickel company in New Caledonia says it will attend today's crisis talks despite fresh attacks on its sites this morning.

The company made its participation at talks sponsored by the French high commission conditional on there being security in place.

Its site suffered millions of dollars in damage in last weekend's attack by members of the Rheebu Nuu group opposed to the project.

Riot police broke up blockades this week and two men were jailed for their role in the vandalism.

Goro now says despite an arson attack this morning, it will join the roundtable talks today.

Goro is the biggest industrial project under way in the South Pacific.
