Samoans about to join American Samoan Flag Day celebrations

1:50 pm on 10 April 2006

Groups from Samoa invited to this year's Flag Day celebrations in American Samoa will begin arriving in Pago Pago tomorrow.

Flag Day marks the first raising of the US flag in American Samoa after chiefs of Tutuila and Manu'a ceded their islands to the United States 106 years ago.

It is customary for Samoa to send large entertaining groups and long boats for the Flag Day evening which is the main holiday in the territory.

This year the villages of Siumu and Leauvaa will perform in the traditional entertainment along with the Don Bosco Trade School.

The festivities for Flag Day kick off tomorrow with a three night performing arts festival which will feature ethnic groups residing in the territory and Samoan entertainers.

Dignitaries from neighboring islands have been invited.
