Guam senator seeks 1998 election probe

A Guam senator has requested an investigation into the possible use of US Congress funds to influence the 1998 governor's election on Guam.

The Marianas Variety newspaper reports that Senator Benjamin Cruz has asked the House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, to look into a possible misuse of federal funds by staffers of former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

Documents indicate Mr DeLay's staffers, Tony Rudy and Michael Scanlon, crafted the strategy on behalf of the Republican gubernatorial team, including Felix Camacho.

Mr Camacho, who is seeking re-election, says the allegations are part of a smear campaign against him.

The governor's office says there is a process in place that allows any resident to address inconsistencies they believe may have occurred in an election.
