University of PNG seeks new vice chancellor

3:44 pm on 10 April 2006

The University of Papua New Guinea's chancellor Andrew Yauieb says it is now advertising the position of vice chancellor after last Friday's resignation of Professor Leslie Eastcott.

Professor Eascott resigned along with the Registrar Vincent Malaibe and Bursar Edward Croake.

Professor Eastcott had said that he wouldn't quit until he received due compensation for the suffering he and other staff endured during last year's student protest.

He says Professor Eastcott accepted the offer of about 600,000 US dollars for damages plus contractual entitlements - instead of the 1.5 million US dollar payout he had previously wanted.

Mr Yauieb says they have made an interim appointment for the vice chancellor vacancy.

"Professor Ross Hynes will act in the position while we advertise the position domestically and internationally in the hope of finding a suitable replacement on qualification experience and on merit basically."

Andrew Yauieb says new appointments for the registrar and bursar will be made later.
