Two Fiji election workers sacked over bribery allegations

8:11 pm on 11 April 2006

In Fiji, two enumerators engaged in registering voters who are alleged to have accepted bribes to tamper with electoral rolls have been sacked.

Radio Legend reports that the sacking has been confirmed by the District Officer Ba, Nacanieli Lomani, who says the two are no longer employed by the Elections Office following the allegations made against them.

Mr Lomani says the matter is now being handled by the police and a decision on whether further action will be taken depends on their investigation report.

The enumerators are alleged to have accepted bribes from three politicians to transfer the names of voters from other constituencies to the ones in which they were standing.

Police have yet to confirm on whether the politicians engaged in the bribery of the enumerators have been questioned.

The alleged incidents took place while voters were being registered in the Ba Open and Magodro Open constituencies.
