9:39 am on 12 April 2006

The Board of American Samoa's LBJ Hospital has approved the waiving of fees for prenatal patients who are entitled to free medical care under certain conditions.

Board Chairman, Charles Warren, says the board and LBJ management feel that this group is especially at risk since the infant mortality rate of American Samoa is nearly twice the US rate.

The board has also approved the resumption of the off-island medical referral programme from May 1st.

The programmme has been on hold since last year.

The board has instructed the LBJ management to implement a continuous awareness programme informing the public that emergency services will be provided to anyone regardless of their ability to pay.
