PNG landowners dig up road in protest action

Access into the oil and gas project areas of Papua New Guinea's Southern Highlands has been blocked by landowners.

The Post Courier newspaper reports that people in Poroma sub-district dug a huge drain across the road on Monday preventing trucks reaching Kutubu and other oil and gas fields.

The paper quotes a police officer sent to the scene as saying local people took the action to force the government to improve the road which has been in a poor state for many years.

At least ten supply trucks bound for the oil fields are said to be stranded in Mendi waiting for authorities to deal with the situation.
