Vanuatu policeman suspended for assaulting publisher

3:53 pm on 13 April 2006

Vanuatu's minister for internal affairs says he has disciplined the police officer who this year assaulted a media owner.

The publisher of the Daily Post newspaper, Marc Neil Jones, was thrown into jail for five hours on a charge of careless driving by seven police officers.

One of the officers, Sergeant Pakoa Lukai, assaulted the editor on a recent rugby game and as the minister, George Wells, says the officer had to face the consequence for this behaviour.

The minister says the officer was suspended.

But sources indicate any matter of further action is with the police.
