The Fiji Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, says he does not expect another coup if his party returns to government after next month's general election.
Mr Chaudhry was finance minister in the Bavadra government which was overthrown in the 1987 Rabuka coups and was prime minister in May 2000 when his government was seized by George Speight's gunmen and held hostage for 56 days.
Replying to a question during a talk back show on Radio Legend's Fijian language sister station today, Mr Chaudhry said the police and the military stand for democracy and will ensure that Labour remains in power if it wins the election.
He says in the past few years people have seen the determination of the military and the police, both of which have given assurances that they will protect whichever government is elected.
Mr Chaudhry says he accepts those assurances that they will not be seeing what happened in 1987 and 2000.
He says the people of Fiji should feel assured by what the military commander and the police commissioner have said on this subject.
