French experts to disclose Goro study findings

4:26 pm on 25 April 2006

French scientists have arrived in New Caledonia to present preliminary research findings on the environmental effects of the Goro Nickel project.

The nickel project is the biggest industrial project in the South Pacific with a planned investment of about two billion US dollars.

But Kanak Rheebu Nuu activists and other groups have raised concerns about its environmental impact.

Rheebu Nuu activists have caused millions of dollars in damage to equipment on the Goro site three weeks ago, calling for better environmental standards.

Our correspondent, Tuo Chinula, says Rheebu Nuu has been invited to meet the French researchers to raise its concerns.

"I believe it was Philippe Gomes, the president of the Southern province, who has been saying over the past few weeks that Rheebu Nuu is invited to all meetings that take place on the issue and that they would be invited to meet with the experts and to raise any concern that they have about the project and the environment with the experts."

The research is expected to be finalised in October.

Meanwhile, Goro Nickel has resumed work partly yesterday, and there have been no reported incidents.
