Losing Samoa election candidate files petition against winner

Samoa's former Minister of Police, Ulu Vaomalo Kini, has withdrawn his request for a judicial recount of the election result for Faleata West.

He has instead filed a court petition against eventual winner of the seat, Independent candidate Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi.

The recount took place Monday but Ulu's committee withdrew.

Ulu got 630 votes in the March 31st election, 165 fewer then Lealailepule.

A member of Lealailepule's camp told the Samoa Observer that after the recounting of two ballot boxes, one of the scrutineers for Ulu started questioning election laws and alleged faults.

Judge Vui Clarence Nelson basically reminded them that they should file a petition if they want to question faults within election laws.

It was then that Ulu's officials opted to withdraw, saying that they would "reconsider their options."

Before the deadline for election petitions closed yesterday Ulu had filed a petition against Lealailepule, alleging "bribery and treating."

The hearing of petitions begins on May 4.
