With just over a week to go before the start of Fiji's general election, it's been reported that a 600,000 US dollar bounty has been placed on the Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry's head.

The Daily Post says police sources have confirmed that Commissioner Andrew Hughes has asked Ba police to investigate the alleged threat.

The allegation is that the plot was hatched by a Suva-based ethnic Indian businessman.

The police sources say that Mr Chaudhry was informed of the death threat last Thursday and raised it with Commissioner Hughes who is having it assessed.

Mr Chaudhry has been very critical of some ethnic Indian businessman and has accused them of funding the May 2000 coup when his government was seized at gunpoint and taken hostage.
