Vanuatu criticised for unclear Papua policy

The Vanuatu government of Prime Minister Ham Lini is being criticised for not having a clear foreign policy on Papua.

The criticism has come from Mr Lini's own sister, Hilda Lini, who was the guest speaker at a ceremony in Port Vila yesterday to commemorate the raising of the Papuan Morning Star flag.

Ms Lini asked the government to make clear if they support the call for independence for Papuans from Indonesian rule or not.

She says that the foreign policy of the coalition governments in Vanuatu over recent years have not been clear.

"So that it made us question whether we are still very much committed to the non-aligned foreign policy that we had immediately after independence. We who are not Papuans but have set up support groups all over the world, we should be getting our directive from the Papuans as to what support they need from us."
