NZ says no Fiji request to extradite officer for court-martial

The New Zealand foreign ministry says it has received no request from Fiji for the extradition of a former senior Fiji officer at the centre of last January's alleged mutiny attempt.

The Fiji military says it wants to court-martial the former acting land force commander, Colonel Jone Baledrokadroka, over his role in trying to oust the military commander, Frank Bainimarama.

The military has been advised that there is no extradition treaty and that the home affairs ministry may have to approach its New Zealand counterpart for assistance.

The court martial cannot proceed if the officer in question is out of the country.

The military says he is in New Zealand but this could not be confirmed by the Fiji Embassy in Wellington.

The New Zealand immigration ministry says the issue is with the foreign ministry which in turn says it's a matter for the Fiji military.
