MSG foreign affairs ministers to visit Solomon Islands

10:05 am on 9 May 2006

A special visit to Solomon Islands by foreign affairs ministers and officials from Melanesian Spearhead Group MSG countries starts today.

Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs in Honiara Jeremiah Manele says the group will make courtesy calls on the Governor General, the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, RAMSI representatives and senior government officials during their visit to Honiara.

Mr Manele says the visit was an initiative of the MSG to show support and solidarity for a member country in trouble.

The Pacific News Service, Pacnews says the two day visit to Honiara will also explore ways and means MSG countries can assist Solomon Islands, as it moves towards rebuilding its economy and confidence amongst the people.

Papua New Guinea's Sir Rabbie Namaliu and his MSG counterpart, Sato Kilman from Vanuatu will meet with the new Solomon Islands foreign affairs minister, Patteson Oti.

Fiji's caretaker foreign affairs minister, Kaliopate Tavola is unable to attend the meeting and will be deputised by his chief executive officer, Isikeli Mataitoga.

The group leaves Honiara on Thursday.
