An American Samoa businessman who fled to Apia last week on a fishing boat has returned to the territory and was taken into custody.

Timothy Jones has been charged with the rape of a 13 year old girl last December.

Mr Jones had feld to Apia last week after a stop order had been issued prohibiting his departure from the territory.

He escaped on a fishing boat that he had recently bought.

The vessel was detained by local authorities when it returned from Apia last week.

After learning that authorities in Samoa were searching for him, Mr Jones turned himself into the Samoa police and made arrangements to return to American Samoa.

He will appear in District Court tomorrow.
