PNG-Australian business leaders talk about law and order

4:32 pm on 17 May 2006

The improvement of law and order in Papua New Guinea was one of the central points discussed at an annual business meeting between PNG and Australia in Cairns.

The forum tried to identify and promote business opportunities between the two countries, increase knowledge in Australia about investment opportunities in PNG, and strengthen existing business relationships.

The executive director of the Australia PNG business council, Frank Yourn, says the meeting called on the two governments to resolve outstanding issues.

Mr Yourn says the business environment in PNG has improved over the last years, but the law and order situation remains problematic.

"We addressed law and order at the conference. We had presentations from the Australian federal police commissioner, from the minister for justice, who until recently was also the minister for internal security, and from his successor. And all of those people are committed to improve the law and order situation."
