11:35 pm on 18 May 2006

The Fiji Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, has attacked the prime minister, saying Laisenia Qarase is not capable of providing the leadership the nation needs right now.

Mr Chaudhry launched the attack right after Mr Qarase offered seven cabinet seats to Labour in a multi-party cabinet in line with the power-sharing provisions of the constitution.

Mr Chaudhry agreed the portfolios offered were substantial but added the ministries were in a mess and the prime minister wanted Labour to clean them up.

On whether he would join a multi-party cabinet, Mr Chaudhry said he had certain standards and was concerned about the state of the nation, and hoped Mr Qarase was equally concerned.

He said there is a lot of poverty and unemployment and the Labour Party wants to see a commitment to governing wisely and in the interest of the people. .

Mr Chaudhry also warned of legal action against the outcome of the general elections saying he had evidence that the Elections Office was in a conspiracy to disenfranchise voters.
