Fiji Labour party members to boycott swearing in ceremony

9:44 am on 23 May 2006

Fiji Labor Party members named to join the prime minister, Lianes Qarase's multi-party cabinet are planning to boycott the swearing in ceremony this morning.

This follows Labour Party anger that Mr Qarase did not accept the portfolios recommended to him by their leader, Mr Chaudhry.

Following an emergency caucus meeting late last night, Labour will hold another today at 11.00am - the same time that the swearing in of SDL ministers will take place at Government House.

Labour wants more talks with Mr Qarase today to persuade him to accept its recommendations.

But Mr Qarase is quoted as saying that if Mr Chaudhry accepted his offer with conditions, he was actually declining it because he should accept the offer without conditions.

Mr Qarase says he will not allow Mr Chaudhry to dictate to him because there had been similar cases in the past.

Mr Qarase says today's swearing in will continue with or without Labour ministers.
