Former Fiji prime minister says UPP Party leader could lead the opposition

9:51 am on 30 May 2006

The former Fiji prime minister and one of the architects of the 1997 Constitution, Sitiveni Rabuka, says the United People's Party leader, Mick Beddoes, is in contention to be the new opposition leader.

It was Mr Rabuka who brought in the multi-party cabinet provisions of the constitution which has led to debate about who is left in the opposition after Labour joined the SDL in government.

Mr Rabuka has told Radio Legend that the disengagement of the United People's Party from its coalition with Labour and the Party of National Unity has cleared the way for the two UPP members elected into parliament to hold the position.

But he says this can only occur if the names of the UPP MPs were not put forward for inclusion in the multi-party cabinet.

Mr Rabuka says in his opinion it is more legitimate for Mr Beddoes to take on the opposition leader's office.

The Labour leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, maintains that he should be opposition leader even though 9 of his MPs are in the government.

President Iloilo is due to make an appointment to the office today.
